Isn’t she wonderful? So present, so real. It’s the sort of true-to-life portrait that must have made his heart ache after her tragic loss. I don’t think we can appreciate in our modern era of photography, anything like the impact and power of having a portrait with a true likeness of someone you loved, especially when you painted it yourself, when you were falling in love. I think that’s what her expression is about. She knows he’s in love with her. And she is amused, fond, indulgent. She’s being won-over. One gloved hand belongs to her protector brother - he lays a proprietorial hand on her wrist, but her left hand is free, ungloved, animated, touching her cheek. She is considering her suitor with something like wry amusement. I do love this painting. Makes me want to go to Lisbon just to visit it. Thank you for sharing it here.
